Govt closes hundred cooperatives suspected misusing grants

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, UNGARAN – Semarang Provincial Government took an action by closing fake cooperatives in its region. Data of the Office of Cooperatives, Medium Business, Industries and Trade showed 174 fake cooperatives had been closed during the last three years.

Semarang Regent, Mundjirin, said there were many other cooperatives were ready to be closed. Some of them were left by its management and some others used fake names on the management structure.

He said the decree to close dozens of cooperatives had been signed. There were also 200 of total 441 units of cooperatives were ready to close. He said the cooperatives should be closed because they did not have any activity.

“The cooperatives want to get grants of Rp25 million per unit from Semarang Government,” said Mundjirin in Ungaran on Monday (March 27).

As a result, many new cooperatives emerged. But when the programs was stopped, the cooperatives disappeared . There was no activity in the society.

“If there are 200 cooperatives, every of each gets Rp25 million. It means there are Rp500 billion are wasted. It is absorbed by the fake cooperatives,” he said.
