Wiranto to take firm action on rally during pre-election silence week

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Coordinationg Minister on Politic, Law, and Security Affairs, Wiranto, stated there was no any party allowed to exploit the simultaneous elections 2017 to hold a rally. Moreover, the action was likely to intimidate people to vote for a particular candidate. "We would not let any party tried to take advantage of the election, which was precisely tarnish what we've done,” said him in a press conference at his office in Jakarta, on Monday.

Wiranto said he had instructed law enforcement agencies to take firm action without hesitation and indiscriminately against those who disrupt the election process, including in the pre-election silence week. He argued that the period should be peaceful. "Nobody is allowed to trigger any chaos." 

He added that the pre-election silence week was a special time provided for the society to calmly consider which candidate was appropriate to be the leader of their region. During the period, there would be no permission issued to hold any mass mobilization agenda. 

When there were mass rally in the silence period, he said, the authorities might take firm actions. He also requested that any parties would not blame them for taking the actions. “We should blame the unlawful parties. Do not be confused,” he said. 

Wiranto said, the General Election Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) as the state officials had already provided guidance to the society due to what was allowed and what was banned.

Previously, there was a news spreading in social media on the discourse of 112 rally. The rally that initiated by the Forum of Islamic Ummah (FUI) will take place on Saturday, February 11 and supported by the National Movement to Safeguard the Indonesian Council of Ulama's Fatwa (GNPF MUI). The mass will have healthy walk preceded by the dawn prayer in congregation at Istiqlal Mosque, Central Jakarta. They are using hashtag siagabahayakomunisme (be aware of communism threat), stopkriminalisasiulama (stop the criminalization against ulema) and dukungpenuhpemimpinmuslim (fullysupportMuslimleader) to promote the event.
