Indonesia, World Bank discuss human capacity development

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla and World Bank Vice President Victoria Kwa Kwa met on Wednesday to discuss the capacity building of human development in Indonesia, related to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in 2030. "This is my second visit to Indonesia, and I see that much progress, including the development that involves all people, has been achieved by the country," Kwa Kwa remarked at the office of Kalla.

The World Bank vice president in charge of Asia-Pacific region also opined that Indonesia has been able to overcome development challenges such as reducing maternal and infant mortality, improving nutrition for infants and toddlers, as well allocating 20 percent of education budget more efficiently and effectively. "Development of human resources from the very early stages, such as nutrition for pregnant women, infants and children, as well as education, will create a strong basis for the development of the entire people of Indonesia," the World Bank vice president said.

Kwa Kwa added that the World Bank will also support all the steps taken by the Indonesian government to improve the human resource capacity through a variety of programs, including in the tourism sector. The World Bank has been running a program to improve the capacity of human resources in the field of tourism in Nusa Dua, Bali, and the expected result can be a model for other tourist areas.

Furthermore, the chairman of vice president expert team, Sofyan Wanandi, said increased capacity in the field of tourism will include infrastructure development, investment, education and training for the tourism sector workforce. "We see the tourism sector as a new source to support growth, and the World Bank knows we have a great potential," he said.

After a meeting with Kalla, the vice president of the World Bank is also scheduled to meet Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Inderawati.
