ICMI asks BNBD to accelerate assistance for Garut flood victims

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Secretary General of Indonesian Association of Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI), Muhammad Jafar Hafsah, has asked West Java National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNBD) to accelerate aid for flood victims in Garut and Sumedang.

"ICMI would like to express deepest condolences on disasters in Garut and Sumedang. We hope BNBD continue its search and rescue for the victims as soon as possible," Jafar said in a statement received by Republika.co.id on Thursday (22/9).

Jafar urged BNBD to quick interven the mitigation of disaster and called for help from outside West Java area.

Meanwhile, joint teams has been searching for missing victims in the Garut flash floods, West Java, on Thursday (22/9).

National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) spokesman Joshua said the joint teams have been searching in three-points of flooded areas and along the Cimanuk River flow.

The victims predicted washed away to Cimanuk River. "We search at Paris Field, Cimacan, and Cimanuk River up to Wado," Joshua said in Bandung, West Java.

Several elements comprising of Basarnas, Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the Police, Indonesian military, Disaster Preparedness Youths (Tagana), volunteers, and people hand in hand to search for the missing victims.

 

So far, there are 11 people reported missing, while death toll has reached 23. Survivor of the flash flood and landslide predicted 1.000 people. They stay in four refugee camp at Bayongbong, Korem Tarumanegara, Kodim 0611 Garut, and Cimacan, West Java.
