Palapa Ring project increases internet access for people

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANADO -- Minister of Communication and informatics Rudiantara, said the Palapa Ring project will increase the information access wider.

"The project aims at accelerating the growth and distribution of telecommunication network," the minister said here on Friday.

The Palapa Ring project is one of Indonesia's priority infrastructure projects in 2016-2019. This project builds an undersea fiber-optic cable network that stretches across 13,000 kilometers and an onshore network of nearly 22,000 kilometers to provide fast broadband internet to the people living in urban and rural areas.

The project, according to the minister, shows that the government is serious to establish cooperation with investors in infrastructure development in the country. The project which divided into three packages of west, central and east is the first cooperation on telecommunication sector under availability payment method scheme initiated by the Ministry of Finance.

The minister said the project is supported by the National Planning and Developing Board, the Ministry of Finance and Penjaminan Infrastruktur Indonesia, or Indonesia Infrastructure Guarantee Fund (IIGF), as a State-Owned Enterprise playing a pivotal role in attracting private capital for infrastructure development to accelerate Indonesia's economic growth.

The Palapa Ring of Central section, the minister said, is divided into five projects covering 17 cities/district in East Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi and North Maluku.

The five projects consist of Project Four (Long Bagun), Projct Five (Petasia, Bungku and Wangudu), Projct Six (West Wawonii, Raha, Sawerigidi, Lakudo and Burangga), Project Seven (Salakan, Banggai, Taliabu), and Project Eight (Ondong Siau, Tahuna, Melonguane, South Morotai and Tidore).

The state-owned of PT Len Telekomunikasi Indonesia has completed a field survey and is preparing the construction of fiber optic communication system, submarine cable communication system and microwave, Rudiantara added.
