Minister to study reclamation issue at Jakarta Bay

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The new coordinating maritime affairs minister Luhut Binsar Panjaitan said  he will study the issue of reclamation of Jakarta Bay which being debated while Rizal Ramli served in that position.

"I want to learn this (reclamation issue), give me time for two weeks," Luhut said after the handover ceremony in Jakarta, Thursday (28/7).

Luhut does not want to rush decide to continue the reclamation project of Jakarta Bay, because, in addition to studying the legal issues, he want to visit the G Island which its reclamation decided to stop last June.

He also want to invite the parties who make a feasibility study about reclamation of Jakarta Bay as an evaluation. Luhut will determine the continuation of the reclamation project, for the benefits for the people and its investment opportunities.

"Next week maybe I want to look over there (G Island). Let me and my team see in the field, see the law and how the advantage for the communities, also the confidence of investors. Do not let us do mistake and investors harmed, not fair, " he said.

Further, the related reclamation of Benoa Bay, Luhut also said he will study about it. However, he asked the public to not hold prejudice and associate with political problems because Benoa Bay reclamation was decided during the era of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

"We will learn all because all decided by SBY about presidential decree of Benoa Bay. Of course there is a reason, so I want to see it again. Do not continue to prejudice, we'll see calmly what's the benefit for the people," he argued.

In the same occasion, Rizal Ramli maritime handed over all decisions about the reclamation to Luhut. He believed, Luhut will take the best decision.

"Mr. Luhut will take the best decision," he said.

Previously, Rizal Ramli recommend cancellation of G Island reclamation project in the Jakarta Bay due to considered committed serious violations for endangering the environment, marine traffic, and vital project. The island was also rated disrupt traffic of fishing vessels which should be easily docked at Muara Angke.
