Magnitude-4.8 earthquake jolts Alor

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale jolted Alor District in East Nusa Tenggara Province at 12:50 p.m. local time on Friday.

The Local Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency has reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 7.14 degrees Southern Latitude and 126.60 degrees Eastern Longitude at a depth of 378 kilometers (km), and some 200 km northeast of Alor District.

So far, no immediate reports of fatalities and material damage have been received, but Eden Klakik, an Alor resident, noted that the earthquake was strong enough to prompt the local people to flee their houses in panic.

Indonesia's more than 17 thousand islands are scattered along a belt of volcanic and seismic activity known as the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is one of the most quake-prone regions on the planet.
