President extends condolences over demise of Husni Kamil Manik

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has extended his condolences over the demise of Chairman of the General Elections Commission (KPU) Husni Kamil Manik.

"I want to express my deepest condolences over the demise of Mr Husni Kamil Manik, the KPU chairman," President Jokowi stated in Solo, Friday.

Jokowi believes that Manik had efficiently carried out his tasks as the KPU chairman.

Manik was a hard worker, humble, and had high integrity, according to the president.

"He, I see, had worked hard and had high integrity in carrying out (his tasks), including in preparing, planning, and implementing regional head elections in regions and the elections for the district heads, mayors, and governors, as well as the president," he affirmed.

Manik passed away at the Pertamina Central Hospital in South Jakarta where he was being treated for an infection that had spread to various organs.

KPU Commissioner Hadar Nafis Gumay informed Antara here on Thursday evening that Husni had, so far, showed no signs of suffering from any other illnesses or deteriorating health.

"Our friends and I had never seen him sick and knew he was undergoing health massage therapy. An infection spread through his body. I do not know all the facts yet, as I have not met his family," Gumay stated.

Manik was admitted to RSP Pertamina on Thursday morning and was pronounced dead by doctors at 9:10 p.m.local time. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Manik was born in Medan, North Sumatra, on July 18, 1975, and was a member of KPU West Sumatra from 2003-2008 and 2008-2013.

He had played an active role in various political activities and had been an election monitor since his days as a student at the Andalas University.
