Jokowi to boost Natuna's fishing industry

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Joowi) held a limited meeting to discuss the development of the Natuna District on Tuesday (29/6).

The President said there are three things that will be the focus of the government in the development of Natuna area, namely fisheries, oil and gas, also defense.

"I can report production in the fisheries sector in Natuna is only 8,9 percent of all potentials. It needs to be encouraged so can bring more benefit for us," he said when opening the meeting, Wednesday.

In the oil and gas sector, he said there are 16 oil and gas blocks in Natuna waters. From 16 blocks that exist, only five blocks can production, seven blocks is still in the exploratory stage, and four blocks in termination stage.

The president asked the ministers to encourage the development of oil and gas sector, so all the blocks to be productive immediately. And in defense sector, Jokowi emphasized that Natuna, which bordering the South China Sea, must be maintained its sovereignty.

Therefore, he instructed the Navy and Maritime Security Board (Bakamla) to activate the guard patrol in this region.
