Effectiveness of payment for plastic bags program assessed

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEKASI -- The Environmental Management Agency (BPLH) of Bekasi City, West Java, has conducted a study about the effectiveness of the payment for plastic bags.

"Program of payment plastic bags initiated by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and has been running for about three months in Bekasi, but we still have not seen its impact," said head of BPLH of Bekasi City Supandi Budiman, on Sunday (12/6).

He added, the study about the effectiveness of plastic bags payment is conducted through survey method to a number of consumers and retailers in Bekasi.

"Previously we have gathered retailers last week to discuss the side effects and measure the effectiveness of the implementation of the policy," he said.

The side effects are referred to, in the form of consumer objections related to the policy and the impact on retailers in the supply of plastic bags.

"Now, the retailers are conducting data collection on how much the use of plastic materials before and after the implementation of the reduction of plastic bags regulation," he said.

Head of Trade Department of Bekasi City Herbert Panjaitan assess the use of plastic bags by consumers in Bekasi are still high due to the relatively low selling price.

"So if the price of plastic bags can be rise can make the societies rethink to buy the plastic," he said.

He added, the Ministry has handed over the authority of pricing plastic bags to local governments.

"In other cities already set at a plastic bag price to Rp 5.000," he said.
