REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is preparing to construct several sea fishing ports (PPS) for local fishermen in Papua Province.
The head of Papua Province's Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office, FX Mote, said here on Friday that KKP has selected four sites to build PPS. These are in the districts of Merauke, Timika, Biak Numfor and Sarmi or Jayapura city.
"The KKP is still studying the readiness of Sarmi District to build the PPS. If the district government is not found ready, the PPS could be built at another location in Jayapura city. I have conveyed to the district government to speed up the arrangements to build the PPS," he stated.
According to Mote, the governments of four districts selected for PPS construction were asked to immediately submit reports about their preparedness for the construction.
"They should immediately report if they are ready to start building the PPS at least by June or July because PPS construction will be undertaken with funds from the state revenue budget. If these reports are delayed, funding for the construction will not be available," Mote explained.
Mote pointed out that the KKP had conducted several surveys to see the state of readiness of the four district governments.
Mote informed that it had facilitated four districts and one city in Papua Province to seek assistance in the form of fishing boats from the KKP. After these were evaluated by the KKP, they were found as deserving of this assistance.
The demand for fishing boats came from the districts of Jayapura, Biak Numfor, Yapen, Waropen, Nabire, Merauke, Timika, and Jayapura city.
"They asked for boats of different sizes, measuring five, ten, 30, even 50 gross tons," he added.
