Police detain eight people on way to protest against Ahok

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Jakarta Metro Jaya Police detained eight people, who were heading to a demonstration against Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) to be supposedly staged in front of the Corruption Eradication Commission's office here, Thursday.

"The officers have detained eight people for interrogation," Senior Commissioner Awi Setiyono, spokesman of the Jakarta police, confirmed.

Personnel from the Jakarta Police's Intelligence and Security Directorate have questioned them.

The personnel have 24 hours to interrogate them and decide their legal status, he remarked.

The police also seized a truck and cargo car carrying sound system equipment to be used during a protest demonstration bearing the slogan "Arrest Ahok" by the public.

Human rights activist Ratna Sarumpaet and musician Ahmad Dhani, who were planning to be part of the demonstration, expressed their disappointment over the failure to hold the protest.
