Franz Magnis: Communism will not rise anymore

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The clergy Franz Magnis Suseno assesses that the communist ideology will not rise anymore in Indonesia. This is because communist ideology is a relic of the 20th century that has now become obsolete. Franz commented during a discussion at Atma Jaya Catholic University in Jakarta, Tuesday (31/5), responding to the fearness of some people who believe that this ideology will reappear in Indonesia.

In addition to North Korea, he said, there is no longer a country that implemented Karl Marx ideology to govern the country.

"We see Russia collapsed, China liberate themselves. The only example that applied communism is North Korea and no country like North Korea," said Franz.

He said that now there is no evidence that the separatist movement  in Indonesia is done by the communists.

"Communism is not there anymore, since 1968 there are no more communists who revolted in Indonesia," he said.

However, he speculated the resurfacing of communism issues because there are parties who are did not wanted its disgrace in the massacre after 1965 revealed. According to Franz, many actors involved in the massacre in that era did not acknowledge the tragedy that occurred in the 1965-1966.

"In Maumere, there are around 800 people accused communists who were slaughtered by Catholic trained by military. This is just Maumere only, not anywhere else," he said. Besides, the possibility of the creation of proxy war seemed possible, to divert other issues.
