REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDA ACEH -- The Aceh Provincial government has committed to reducing carbon emissions to 7 percent to support Indonesia's commitment to decreasing emissions up to 29 percent by 2030.
"Aceh has become a part of the solution for Indonesia and the world," Aceh Governor, Zaini Abdullah said at an international seminar on climate change on Thursday.
According to Zaini, the Aceh administration can also achieve 20 percent of carbon emission reduction if the state budget and international aid fully supports the provincial government.
Aceh has signed two documents to the resolve climate change problem, including the Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Action Plan and the Action Plan on Reducing Emission of Deforestation and Degradation (REDD++).
The Governor said both documents will be a basic instruction to arrange the program and activities of all related parties, who give attention to emission reduction in a province that is populated by five million people.
Zaini said the administration has conducted several programs and implemented efforts to reduce carbon emissions, such as utilizing the forestry resources? potency, conservancy and protection program to preserving forest resources and rehabilitation of the forest, as well as the green land.
Additionally, the province has also conducted several programs, such as implementing the forest area?s expansion, waste land management development; environmental destruction control and natural resource conservation.
Zaini added that the administration is also managing the environment spatially in the cities, as well as ecotourism development to support the reduction of carbon emissions.
"The program's implementation is yet to work optimally due to the limited budget. We hope that we get support from all parties to reduce carbon emissions to 20 percent by 2030," Zaini said.
