REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro said the government hopes to raise revenues in taxes regardless of tax amnesty by intensifying tax collections.

"Approved or disapproved (tax amnesty bill) we would step up tax collection," Bambang said here on Monday.

He said tax amnesty policy is only an instrument for capital repatriation into the country to increase tax revenue.

He acknowledged that tax revenues fell short of expectation until April 2016, but he said he was not worried as the deficit in the state budget is still under control.

"I have asked the taxation director general to intensify tax collection starting June, if necessary by expanding tax base," he said.

The parliament has not started debate on the tax amnesty bill proposed by the government as the government and the parliament have yet to wrap up discussion on regulation on the policy, he said.

According to plan, debated on the tax amnesty bill would start after the parliamentary recess which ended on Tuesday.

Data at the finance ministry showed that by April 16 , tax revenues totaled only Rp98 trillion or Rp7 trillion lower than in April last year.

Based on the trend, tax revenues are predicted to fall Rp300 trillion short of the yearly target.

Cumulatively, tax revenues in the first four months of the year totaled Rp283 trillion or 20.8 percent of the whole year's target of Rp1,360 trillion.

In the same period last year tax revenues totaled Rp309 trillion or 23.8 percent of the target.

Meanwhile, Darussalam, a tax observer from the Tax Center accused many non governmental organizations of being penetrated by foreigners leading a campaign against tax amnesty bill.

"The NGOs should be aware of the importance of the bill for the economy and the welfare of the people," Darussalam said here on Monbday.

He said tax amnesty policy is in line with the long term program of reform in tax policy and it is important to strengthen self financing in the country's development program.
