REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NUSA DUA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officially opened the Golkar Party's Extraordinary National Congress here on Saturday evening, and hoped the party would cooperate in improving the welfare of Indonesian people.

"It is impossible for the government to work alone to achieve the people's welfare. The government should work together with all sections of society, the strategic groups, particularly political parties such as Golkar and others," Jokowi said in his opening speech at the Golkar Party's Extraordinary National Congress.

According to him, the Golkar party upholds political ethics in the country and has contributed many prominent statesmen who helped develop a political culture in Indonesia.

"Golkar's thoughts also form the structure of politics, economy and social affairs of Indonesia," the president pointed out.

The head of state further said the political stability ushered in by the political parties in Indonesia was important to expedite development in the country.

On the occasion, the president expressed the hope that the democratization process at the Golkar's Extraordinary National Congress will be able to throw up a new general chairman of the party and support the incumbent government.

At the Congress, the party will elect its general chairman.

Candidates vying for the Golkar chairmanship include Ade Komarudin, Setya Novanto, Airlangga Hartarto, Mahyudin, Priyo Budi Santoso, Aziz Syamsuddin, Indra Bambang Utoyo and Syahrul Yasin Limpo.
