Megawati: Teach girls of self defense

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Fifth President of Republic of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri stressed the protection of children and women is not fully rely on the government. Instead, first protection should be made by the environment of girls such as family and community.

Megawati said, parents should teach children, especially girls not to be weak. Women should be open minded and not mushy. One way that can be done to protect girls is to teach them self-defense.

"Teach the girls about self-defense, such as martial arts, judo or anything else, I don't want to see women mushy," she said while giving a speech in the declaration of Indonesia against Sexual Violence in Jakarta, Thursday (12/5).

Chairman of the PDIP said, Indonesian women must be open minded to absorb knowledge. Women can go to school or leave the house for work.

However, it should be remembered women have the main obligation to educate children and managing the household.

Megawati admitted in spite of being the Chairman of the largest party in Indonesia and ever became president, she have time to do the household such as cooking and washing. In fact, the first daughter of first president of Indonesia, Sukarno claimed that she also telling the stories to her children before sleep.

"The housewife is an obligation, but do not forget to keep searching for knowledge," she added. Megawati think, sexual crimes in the news recently makes the family to be more careful in protecting their daughters.
