Khofifah says aid for pregnant women not cigarettes

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa has stressed that pregnant women who receive financial aid from the government must not use it to buy cigarettes for their husbands.

"(This aid) must not be used by husbands to buy cigarettes or even to buy pulses, but only for infant nutrition," the minister stated here on Tuesday while extending aid as part of the so-called Hopeful Family program (PKH) in Bandung Barat District on Tuesday.

Khofifah further said the community, especially mothers who receive aid under the PKH program, women having babies or mothers of toddlers should use the financial aid to buy nutritional needs for mothers and children.

Once they receive the aid, they must not let their husbands use the money to buy cigarettes, the minister reminded, adding that the aid is aimed at keeping the mothers and their babies healthy.

According to Khofifah, PKH funds worth Rp 1.2 million are being spent for pregnant women in need and women having babies, and the amount is remitted in four instalments every year.
