REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government managed to achieve the target of creating two million jobs last year, thanks to close cooperation among the institutions concerned, Manpower Minister H Hanif Dhakiri said.

The success was possible due to the role played by all the relevant ministries and government agencies, including the Manpower Ministry, the Home Affairs Ministry, the Public Works and Housing Ministry, the Agriculture Ministry, the Small and Medium Business Ministry, the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), and the Agency of Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI), he said here on Monday.

"The government and the private sector must always work hard to create job opportunities to reduce the unemployment rate," he stated at a working meeting with the House of Representatives Commission IX at the parliament building here.

He explained that the government has stepped up efforts to create more jobs by undertaking various activities in the industrial, infrastructure and economic sectors.

"The private sector also plays a big role in helping the government expand job opportunities through business activities and expansion of projects," he said.

Data from the Manpower Ministry shows that the government managed to create 2,001,272 jobs last year through seven main activities, including investment, overseas placement of Indonesian migrant workers and labor-intensive projects.

The investment sector's contribution in creating jobs was the largest as 1,435,711 jobs were created in this field. Overseas placement of migrant workers created 275,376 jobs, labor-intensive projects 174,122 jobs, and entrepreneurship 80,788 jobs.

The government has set itself the target of creating 10 million jobs between 2015 and 2019, or an average of two million jobs every year.
