SAR deploys chopper to find missing Russian climber

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, Denpasar -- The Search and Rescue (SAR) office in Denpasar has deployed a helicopter to find a Russian tourist who was reported missing while climbing Mount Agung in Karangasem district.

"We have deployed a helicopter to help (SAR) officers find the tourist from the air," spokesman for the SAR office Amtarama said here on Thursday.

The BO-105 HR-1521 helicopter has been sent to Karangasem district to help the search effort.

The SAR office in Denpasar has sent five officers to help the SAR command post in Karangasem which have assigned 10 officers to find the Russian national identified as Ildar, he said.

He said security officers and local residents are also involved in the search for the Russian tourist.

The SAR office received a report on the disappearance of Ildar on Wednesday afternoon when the local residents observed the Day of Silence (Nyepi).

He believed the ill fated tourist has lost his way in the 3,142 meter high volcano.

Ildar is believed to have gone missing about 200 meters from the peak of the volcano which last erupted in 1963, he said.

Information from the SAR office in Denpasar said Ildar began climbing Mount Agung on Sunday (March 6) on his own.

However, the tourist who stayed on Benesari Street in Kuta, Badnung district, is still missing.
