REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Indonesia and Singapore navies conducted a joint exercise, code-named "Eagle Indopura 2016," in Singapore on Monday.
The Indonesian Eastern Fleet Command spokesman, Lt.Col. Maman Sulaiman, said in a press statement received here that the exercise was officially opened by Singapore's Fleet Commander, Rear Admiral Lew Chun Hang.
The exercise involved Indonesian warships KRI Sultan Hasanuddin-366 and KRI Sultan Iskandar Muda-367 and a team from the Eastern Fleet Command's frogmen unit as well as a team from the Western Fleet Command's frogmen unit.
The supporting elements include KRI Teluk Bintuni-520, KRI Lemadang-623, KRI Barakuda-633, CN-235 P-861 and Haly Bell-412 HU=417 while elements from Singapore included RSS Tenacious and RSS Galland.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Indonesian defense attache in Singapore, Col. Sumartono, Operations Assistant of the Western Fleet Command, Col. I Gusti Kompyang Aribawa, commander of KRI SHN-366, Lt. Col. Sandharianto as task force chief and commander of KRI SIM-367, Lt. Col Ashari Alamsyah.
On the occasion, Western Fleet Commander Rear Admiral A Taufiq R called on the participants to pay attention to the safety of personnel and materials during the exercise and to build good communication.
He said the exercise, carried out under the theme "Exercise Eagle Indopura 2016 Maritime Security Cooperation to Strengthen Friendship," marked the 40th anniversary of cooperation for such exercises between the Indonesia and Singapore navies.
"During the period, it has been proven that the cooperation between the two has led to technical as well tactical benefits and it is hoped it would positively impact the diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Singapore in general and between the Indonesian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy, in particular," he said.
