REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The Surabaya city education office has launched a curriculum that allows parents or guardians to take active part in their children's education.

"We are adopting a curriculum which involves parents' active participation, both at school and home," head of the office's elementary education curriculum section, Munaiyyah, said here on Saturday.

The parents' role is not merely limited to the need for school facility and infrastructure, she said on the sidelines of a contest, bazaar and charity activity at the elementary school, SD Khadijah here.

Munaiyyah represented Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini who could not show up at the event for unavoidable reasons.

"Actually, the curriculum is in line with the 2013 curriculum, but emphasizes tasks that parents can undertake themselves as part of their children's education," she said.

Such self-reliant tasks include accompanying children in carrying out school tasks outside schooling hours to develop their competency, she said.

"There are a lot of school tasks that children and their parents must do together. Every school assigns different tasks, as per the management of each school," she said.

Any school and the parents of its students can negotiate to draw up such a program, for instance, writing a story about parents' profession, she added.
