REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BATAM -- The Water Police of Riau Islands has foiled an attempt to smuggle five tons of tin sand to Singapore by a speed boat.

"The tin was to be smuggled by a Riski One gt-6 speedboat at Lingga District waters," Director of Riau Islands Water Police, Senior Commissioner Hero Henrianto Bachtiar, said here on Tuesday.

Six suspects had been arrested for failing to show legal documents for the tin sand.

Their boat was intercepted on Monday at 7.30 p.m. local time at Selayar water of Penuba Village.

The boat and the evidence in the form of five tons of tin sand had been secured at the pier of the local water police office in Sekupang, Batam District for investigation.

Previously, the local police had several times foiled similar attempts to smuggle tin sand from Lingga to Singapore.

In 2015, the police had also conducted a series of raids to stop illegal tin mining activities in Lingga District.
