REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, INDRAMAYU -- Rice cultivation expanded in the district of Indramayu,West Java with local farmers using water for irrigation from the Jatigede dam, in Sumedang, now in trial operation.
Planting took place in wider areas as farmers could make use of the trial operation of the dam, deputy chairman of the Indramayu fishermen and farmers association, Sutatang said.
"More rice fields are cultivated everyday encouraged by the operation of the dam," Sutatang said here on Sunday.
The dam was still in trial operation but it has helped farmers in irrigating their rice fields especially 61,000 hecares of rice fields which so far have depended on the Rentang dam in the district of Majalengka for irrigation, he said.
Planting target in the regency of Indramayu in the rainy season is 116,000 hectares.
Currently 29,000 hectares of the target have been been cultivated in the sub-districts of Gabuswetan, Kroya, Bangodua and Tukdana.
