REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- British Ambassador Moazzam Malik was accused of giving ambiguous statement when saying that his country fully supports Papua as part of Indonesia.
"Whereas Britain still provides protection for and allows Papua separatists to open their office in that country. That statement is very ambiguous," a local politician Jimmy Demianus Idjie said.
Ambassador Malik said when on a visit to Papua last week that his government gave full support for Papua integration into Indonesia.
Jimmy, former chairman of the regional legislative body, said the statement by the ambassador raised questions that need clarification.
The statement did not sound good when there are people in Britain seeking to break Indonesian unity, he said.
"Nothing is wrong for the ambassador to speak about cooperation with Indonesia, without political intervention," he said.
He said Britain is expected to show a true recognition of the integration with concrete stance by not allowing individuals or group of people to slander Indonesia.
During his visit to Jayapura, Ambassador Malik met with regional officials including Governor Lukas Enembe and police chief Ins.Gen. Paulus Waterpauw.
He said that the British government has offered scholarship under Chevening program for best students from Papua.
Britain also has provided 8.5 million pounds in assistance for the layout and green investment program in Papua.
