REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Bank Indonesia projected that the value of rupiah against the US dollar would be more stable in 2016. Based on Bloomberg data on Monday (4/1), the exchange rate opened at Rp 13,825 per US dollar. Rupiah fell by 88 points at the level of Rp 13,913 at the opening of stock market.

According to JISDOR reference rate, rupiah exchange rate was set at Rp 13,898 per US dollar. It slightly lowered compared to 31st December 2015 at Rp 13,795 per US dollar.

"In general, the exchange rate will be more stable. We see that the main challenge of rupiah is the large imports compared to exports," said Governor of Bank Indonesia, Agus Martowardojo, after the opening of stock market in Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI), Monday (4/1).

Agus added, the current account deficit (CAD), which in 2014 amounted to 27 billion US dollars, has dropped to a deficit of 17 billion US dollars in 2015. Though it already decreased by 10 billion US dollars, but a deficit still became one challenge of rupiah.

In addition, he said, in 2015 the trade balance was in surplus condition, although there was a bit deficit at the end of the year. Hopefully, the trade balance and the CAD in 2016 would be better.
