REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI) has called on the government to fight corruption effectively in 2016 through prevention and prosecution.
"We also hope that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the Indonesian National Police (Poliri), and the Prosecutor's Office will take an increasingly firm stance in handling corruption and upholding the law in an effort to ensure justice for the people under the legal framework," ICMI Chairman Jimly Asshiddiqie stated at a press conference at a year-end reflection function here on Wednesday.
He said this year was marked by differences between the KPK and Polri over alleged intentions to weaken the anti-graft body.
Jimly cited as examples the initiative to amend the KPK Law, the appointment of new KPK leaders allegedly based on interest, and the move by Polri's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) to fight corruption intensively as was evident by the replacement of the Bareskrim chief.
In the meantime, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Tuesday inaugurated the new building of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) situated along the Kuningan Persada Street in South Jakarta.
The president inaugurated the new building in conjunction with the 12th anniversary of the anti-graft body on December 29, 2015.
Present at the inauguration ceremony were former presidents B.J. Habibie and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, as well as former vice president Hamzah Haz.
The presence of prominent figures such as Habibie, Yudhoyono, and Haz at the inauguration ceremony demonstrated their strong support to the institution that operates under Law No. 30 of 2002.
During his speech, President Jokowi stated that ahead of the New Year 2016, the Commission not only had new leaders but would also start operating from a new building.
"The renewed spirit, which has never been dampened, can motivate us all to fight corruption," the president emphasized.
Jokowi reminded that merely having the spirit is not sufficient to prevent and eradicate corruption.
"The spirit must be supported by a strong institutional capacity, which should be backed by competent human resources that are also strong," added the president.
