8,623 inmates get special remission on Christmas Day

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Christmas Day 2015 joy was felt by some inmates throughout Indonesia. It was because 8,623 inmates got special remission I and special remission II.

"Those who can be free are 110 inmates, just in time for celebration of Christmas Day 2015, after receiving special remission II," said Head of Public Relations of Directorate General Penitentiary, Akbar Hadi, Friday (25/12).

Then, 8,153 Christian prisoners get a reduced sentence after receiving special remission I. The sentence reduction varies between 15 days to 2 months.

The highest amount of inmates who received special remission on Christmas was East Nusa Tenggara, with 1,755 inmates, North Sumatra with 1,595 inmates, and North Sulawesi with 887 inmates.

Those who were received remission, were Christians, who already met the requirements of administrative and substantive. Then, they also have undergone criminal penalties of at least six months, and actively participated in criminal program.

Number of prisons in Indonesia was 477 with 176,413 prisoners and detainees. In details, the prisoners amounted to 118,390 people and detainees amounted to 58,023 people.
