REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMBON -- Ambon and its surrounding areas shook by an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale (SR), on Monday (14/12) at 10:46 local time. The quake was huge and caused panic.
Based on data gathered by Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter was in 4:04 LS - BT 129.57 with a depth of 10 kilometers below the sea surface. Its position was in 105 kilometers southeast of Central Maluku. This earthquake has no potential to cause a tidal wave (tsunami).

Previously, Ambon on Wednesday (9/12) was also hit by an earthquake of 6.9 magnitude. The epicenter was in 99 kilometers southeast of Central Maluku and did not cause a tidal wave (tsunami).
Maluku province is one of the areas that is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis, because it lies at the confluence of three major plates, namely Pacific, Indo Australia and Eurasia. Indo Australia plate got under Eurasia plate and met Pacific plate which was resulting irregular fracture.
