REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- The expansion of the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport in Palembang, South Sumatra, is targeted for completion in 2017 to support the province to host the 2018 Asian Games, South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin stated.

"At the moment, the work on the project is ongoing. We are targeting to complete this project a year before the Asian Games as there will be test events in Palembang," Alex noted here on Thursday.

He added that the airport will be developed on a 310.76-hectare plot of land.

The airport's expansion aims to accommodate the surge in passenger flow, which is expected to increase to 3.6 million passengers per year, from two million recorded earlier.

"The airport's expansion will be carried out in three stages: airport runway, passenger terminal, and cargo warehouse. Some Rp18.3 billion will be spent on the construction project," he explained.

In addition to the expansion of the airport, South Sumatra will also focus on the development of other supporting infrastructure: Bridges Musi IV and VI, highways, flyovers, underpasses, and the development of international hospitals.

In addition, a light rail transit (LRT) mega project to construct 14 stations from Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II to Jakabaring Sport Complex will also be implemented.

Palembang and Jakarta will host the 18th Asian Games, the most prestigious sporting event in Asia.

One of the promotional events to be held ahead of the Asian Games by the South Sumatra provincial administration is "the road to the Asian Games."
