REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PURWOKERTO -- Police in Central Java's Purwokerto city have arrested five people, suspected of drug trafficking and abuse.

The police made the arrest after receiving a tip-off from the public that one of the suspects was about to sell ecstasy pills on Wednesday, a spokesman for police Adjunct Commissioner, Supariya said on Thursday.

The police later arrested the suspect identified by his initials as Ksn.

Based on the investigation of the suspect, he had reportedly sold six ecstasy pills to a 33-year old man identified by his initials as Rn.

"We later arrested Rn. However, the suspect admitted that he had handed over the six ecstasy pills to a 39-year old resident of Sumampir village, identified by his initials as IS. We later arrested IS and seized six ecstasy pills from him as evidence," he said.

Based on the results of a preliminary investigation, Ksn bought the six ecstasy pills from a 20-year old man identified by his initials as DS.

The police then arrested DS, who said he had sold 25 ecstasy pills to the head of Karanganyar village identified by his initials as JP.

"We later arrested JP and seized 24 ecstasy pills from him," he said.

Indonesia is now in a state of emergency over drugs, with nearly 40 to 50 Indonesians dying every day due to drug abuse.

Statistics show that Indonesia has an estimated 4.5 million people affected by drug consumption, of whom 1.2 million cannot be rehabilitated due to their poor health condition.
