Indonesia sets National Mothers' Day in 22 December

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia finally declared 22nd December as National Mothers' Day. The declaration which was conducted by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), stated that 22nd December also reflected the existence of Indonesian women's movement.

Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection, Yohana Yambise , said Mothers' Day in Indonesia is not merely ceremonial. On that day, Indonesia makes women to become shaft of the nation.

Yohanna explained, 22nd December is determined as National Mothers' Day because in 22nd December 1928, there was first women's congress held after the youth congress. 1928 became the starting point of revival of Indonesian women after slumped on gender discrimination for decades.

"Then there was second women's congress in 1935. Prominent Indonesian women figures made various movement on women development," said Yohanna, Wednesday (25/11).

She said, the movement must be understood and reflected to bring a better Indonesia. Yohanna admitted that women are the nation's assets.

"Women prepare our next generation. Women's issues can no longer be secondary issues," she added.
