Not only respiratory infection, smoke victims also can suffer hypoxia

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Association of Specialist Doctors of Indonesia (PB PAPDI) released the effects of smoke that occurred due to land and forest fire. One of the long-term impact was hypoxia disease.

Hypoxia is a condition in which oxygen deprivation can cause health problems and have a direct impact on human organs. Hypoxic condition can damage the blood vessels of the heart and respiratory systems.

"Air pollution over 300 was harmful, especially for those who already have a history of poor health. Children, pregnant women and the elderly are susceptible to the disease due to protracted exposure to smoke," said Bisang Pulmunologi Expert, dr.Zulkifli Amin, in Department of Internal medicine, RSCM, Thursday (12/11).

Zul said, respiratory lung tissue does have its own defense mechanisms. However, repeated exposure to smoke will damage the defense mechanisms that damage the airways and the lung.

"Exposure to smoke for weeks would damage the respiratory tract and cause victims suffer Pneumonia, atelectasis and Tromboembolism, and also chest wall restriction," he added.
