Police arrests 78 suspects of forest fires

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Police was handling 286 cases of land and forest fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra. A total of 266 individuals and corporations had been named as suspects.

"78 suspects have arrested, with details of 73 individuals and five corporations," said Head of Public Relation of Police, Brigadier Agus Rianto, Saturday (7/11).

According to Agus, there were 50 thousand hectares of land and forest burning that were now being investigated by police. The investigators continued to process the examination of the case of forest and land fires.

Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Darmin Nasution, said on Thursday (5/11) night that there was a request that the ministers have not to talk much about land and forest fires. However, Darmin did not mention who ordered it.

National Police Chief, Gen. Badrodin Haiti, claimed that the President and vice president never requested for it. He said, if it was true, then it would interfere the legal process of forest fires cases.
