Indonesian FM attends ASEM in Luxembourg

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi is attending the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) themed "Working Together for Sustainable and Secure Future" in Luxembourg on November 4-6.

"This week, the foreign minister left for Luxembourg to attend ASEM. She will act as a lead speaker during one of the sessions," Arrmanatha Nasir, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, revealed here on Thursday.

The meeting will discuss an array of issues, including climate change, disaster mitigation management, and sustainable development, he remarked.

"In addition, it will also discuss ASEM-related issues, including connectivity and the future of ASEM. A joint statement will also be issued during the meeting," he affirmed.

Arrmanatha said that in the meeting, Minister Retno will act as lead speaker in the session themed "Countering Terrorism and Radicalism."

"The foreign minister will highlight Indonesia's efforts to fight radicalism and extremism through soft power and the role of the two largest Islamic organizations: Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama," he emphasized.

The minister will also shed light on the role of women and mothers in instilling good ideology in their children, he said.

During the course of the meeting, Marsudi will also hold 13 bilateral meetings, including with their counterparts from Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, and Luxembourg.

Established in 1996, the ASEM is a forum aimed at discussing issues related to Europe and Asia.

This forum has so far discussed a range of issues in the political, defense, educational, cultural, and environmental fields.
