REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TANGERANG -- The Tangerang city administration in Banten province will build around 1.6 thousand healthy latrines for the local community in a bid to inculcate clean and healthy lifestyle habits, according to Tangerang Mayor Arief R. Wismansyah

He stated that the healthy latrines will be constructed in cooperation with the Agency for Community Self-Reliance (BKM) in every Neighborhood Community Association (RW).

"The development of a healthy latrine system will be similar to the National Program for Community Empowerment (PNPM), and so, we will cooperate with the BKM in this endeavor," Wismansyah affirmed in Tangerang on Tuesday.

He explained that such development can be achieved if the BKM proposed every household to be equipped with a healthy latrine. The city administration will then help by providing social assistance, which will be given directly to the BKM to build the latrines.

"We hope that through the cooperation with BKMs, every Tangerang community will have a healthy latrine in their respective homes," the Tangerang mayor noted.

According to Wismansyah, the availability of healthy latrines is an important basic sanitation requirement that should be available to every community in Tangerang.

Therefore, he has called on the local community to continue to use healthy latrines and to not harm or contaminate the environment.

"If the Tangerang public does not have access to healthy latrines, they will become vulnerable to different types of diseases. Therefore, it is part of the Tangerang city administration's efforts to encourage its citizens to practice a clean and healthy lifestyle," he affirmed.

Wismansyah remarked that the city administration had set itself a target to build 1.6 thousand healthy latrines in 2015 in different areas of the city of Tangerang. The construction of other healthy latrines will be carried out in stages until 2018.

He expressed hope that by the end of 2018, all citizens of the city of Tangerang would have access to healthy toilets in their respective homes, so that they can lead a clean and healthy lifestyle.

"For the success of this program, we have to involve the BKM, which incidentally is a direct element of the society," he affirmed.
