Ministry of Maritime has sunk 101 foreign ships

Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has sunk 101 units of foreign fishing ships until the end of October 2015.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has sunk 101 units of foreign fishing ships until the end of October 2015. It was evidence of a commitment to the eradication of illegal fishing in Indonesian waters.

"Already 101 ships that were sunk," said Director General of Fisheries Resources Supervision of Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Asep Burhanuddin, on the event of One Year Performance of Marine and Fisheries, in Jakarta, Friday (30/10).

Based on data from the Ministry, the 101 ships were consisted of among others 34 Philippine flagged ships, 33 Vietnam flagged ships, 21 Thailand flagged ships, and six Malaysian flagged ships.

In addition, there were also four Indonesian flagged ships, two Papua New Guinea flagged ships, and a Chinese flagged ships.

"In Saturday (31/10), six more ships in Batam will be sunk, all of them are from neighboring countries," he added.

Earlier, the People's Coalition for Fishery Justice (Kiara) wanted the Government not to only focus on the eradication of illegal fishing but also to improve the welfare of coastal communities.

"President Jokowi and the Cabinet should not only be focused on illegal fishing," said Secretary General of Kiara, Abdul Halim, in Jakarta, Tuesday (20/10).
