Hotspots observed in 12 districts in East Java

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Hotspots spread in East Java Province. Data from Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on 26th October at 05:00 am stated hotspots in East Java were observed in 19 areas over 12 districts.

Head of Data and Information of BMKG Surabaya, Bambang Setiajid, conveyed that total hotspots in 12 districts reached 66 spots. Hotspots were mostly observed in Bondowoso with 21 spots, which were spread over five areas.

Compared to last year, according to Bambang, the dry season in East Java this year was prone to trigger fires. "Drought in East Java is more intense because of El Nino phenomenon," said Bambang, Monday (26/10).

Bambang revealed, 12 districts that hit by fires were Banyuwangi, Bondowoso, Gresik, Jember, Jombang, Kediri, Lumajang, Magetan, Malang, Nganjuk, Probolinggo, and Situbondo.

He informed, areas in East Java were expected to start to rain from late October to late December. "Bromo is predicted to rain in the end of October, while Banyuwangi in the end of December," he added.

Contacted separately, Head of Logistics Emergency of National Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of East Java, Achmad Robiul Fuad, said East Java BPBD team was focusing on fire fighting efforts in three areas that were considered as most severe. The three areas were Mount Lawu in Magetan, Mount Wilis in Nganjuk, and Mount Semeru in Lumajang.
