REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MALANG -- Prolonged dry season made some parts of Mount Semeru were burned. As a result, hiking trail to the highest mountain in Java Island was closed until the fire was extinguished.
"Hiking trail of Mount Semeru as of 22nd October 2015, until unspecified time is closed completely," said head of Great Hall of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, Ayu Dewi Utari, to Republika.co.id, Friday (23/10 ).
According to Dewi, there was a fire at hiking trail between post (shelter) 2 to 3. She received a report from Head of resort of Ranu Pani that the forest fire occurred in Block Watu Rejeng with an area up to 10 hectares on Wednesday (21/10).
"There is also landslide that harmed climbers. Today, the hiking trail is closed temporarily. While climbers who were already in Ranu Kumbolo can walk to Ranu Pani by passing Ayek-Ayek," Dewi explained.
She revealed, until now, fires in Block Watu Rejeng around post 2 and 3 were still not extinguished. Therefore, she sent officers to guide the climbers who were still in area of Semeru.
"Climbers in Semeru are about 30 people. Because of exhaustion, they are still in Ranu Kumbolo to take a break," she added.
