REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BELITUNG -- H.A.S Hanandjoedin Airport of Belitung in Bangka Belitung Province would be upgraded to an international airport. In the early stage, it would serve flight from Belitung to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Regent of Belitung, Sahani Saleh, said to change status of an international airport, there would be improvement of infrastructure such as terminals and extension of the runway.

"If H.A.S Hanandjoedin Airport is upgraded to an international airport, the flight from Belitung to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur can only be taken in one hour," Sahani said, in Tanjung Pandan, Belitung, on Thursday (22/10).

The Airport was currently serving domestic flights from Belitung to Pangkal Pinang, Palembang, and Jakarta with ten flights in a day, with one hour interval. H.A.S Hanandjoedin Airport could accommodate Boeing aircraft types 737-800NG, 737-900ER and Airbus A320.

The airport development, Sahani added, was because Belitung has become one of new tourist destinations in Indonesia. Belitung has the beauty of natural scenery, especially nautical tourism which has 1,000 small islands with coral diversity.

According to him, domestic and foreign tourists visit to Belitung in recent years had increased rapidly. It had reached 577,000 people.
