Forest researchers gather in Indonesia discussing forest conservation

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- Hundreds of researchers from various countries are gathering in this West Java city discussing forest conservation in an international conference of Indonesia forestry researchers (INAFOR).

The two day third INAFOR opened here on Wednesday is held when fires are raging destroying forests in the country mainly in Sumatra and Kalimantan.

Around 600 researchers from 12 countries take part in the conference which concerns mainly with preserving forest as a source of water and energy and to support food security.

"This conference could serve as a forum to formulate a policy to protect forest and the environment from destruction by fires," Director General of conservation Forests Putera Parthama said when opening the conference here.

Foreign representatives to address the conference will include Vice-President of IUFRO, Director General of Cifor, Director General of ICRAF, Executive Secretary of APAFRI from Forest Research Institute of Malaysia, and Director General of Tropenbos.
