64 flight schedules in Riau canceled

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- A total of 64 flight schedules at Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport Pekanbaru on Tuesday (20/10) were canceled due to haze.

"The last update until 08:30 pm, 64 flight schedules were confirmed to be canceled," said Airport Duty Manager, Ibnu Hasan, in Pekanbaru, Tuesday (20/10) night.

He explained, there were only two airlines who had pending status, namely Lion Air and Batik Air Jakarta-Pekanbaru route with flight code JT 392 and ID 7067 at 09:00 pm. From 70 flight schedules, there were only four flights that were successfully landed and flew, namely Silk Air from Singapore at 01:15 pm and Citilink from Batam at 03:00 pm.

He stated that both aircraft were able to land because the visibility range was 1,400 meters. However, the visibility was deteriorating at 04:00 pm, which was only about 800 meters.

"The haze continues to thicken and visibility continues to decline. At 09:00 pm the visibility range was 700 meters," he added.

Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Pekanbaru revealed, some areas in Riau on Tuesday, were still covered by thick haze, with visibility range from 400 meters to 1,000 meters. At 04:00 pm, haze from forest fires mostly occurred in Pelalawan, with visibility range of 400 meters.

"Furthermore, in Rengat and Pekanbaru, the visibility range was from 700 to 800 meters," said Head of BMKG Pekanbaru, Sugarin.

Meanwhile in Dumai, the visibility was observed as far as 1,000 meters. In addition to the four areas, a number of other areas were also reportedly covered by thick haze, such as Bengkalis and Siak.
