REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The founder of Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) Dino Patti Djalal assessed that forest fires and smog could lower the reputation of Indonesia in the international.

"The forest fires that occur mostly in Sumatra and Kalimantan causing smog that spread to our neighboring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia," said Dino Patti Djalal, Wednesday (14/10).

According to him, forest fires and smog were not only problems of Indonesia, but also ASEAN countries. The smog, he added, had a negative impact in politics, economy, social, and psycholoy, for example, the air became dirty, transportation and aviation was also interrupted.

"Others said, the impact of forest fires could increase global emissions by two percent," he explained.

Dino seen, in the Law No. 32 of 2009 on the Protection and Management of the Environment, there is a clause that "allow" the people to burn a maximum of two hectares of land.

"The clause is used to burn the land. In fact, burning the land can not be limited to a maximum of two hectares. Moreover, during the dry season, fires can spread quickly," he said.

He asked the Government and Parliament to revise Law No. 32 of 2009 on Protection and Management of the Environment in anticipation of forest fires that occur every dry season.
