MPR Deputy Chairman attends Taiwan's Independence Day reception

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Deputy chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Hidayat Nur Wahid, attended a reception to mark Taiwan's Independence Day at Hotel Borobudur here on Thursday evening.

He was one of several Indonesian officials at the gathering including Nushron Wahid, the head of the National Agency for Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI), House Commission I deputy speaker Tantowi Yahya and former senior minister of political and security affairs Agum Gumelar.

The head of Taiwan's Trade and Economic Office (TETO), Chang Liang-Jen expressed appreciation to the Indonesian government for increased cooperation between the two countries' governments.

"Although we have no diplomatic relations, our business relations have continued to increase. We have rarely heard complaints because we need each other," he said.

Nusron Wahid on the occasion expressed thanks to the Taiwanese government for having increased the wage of the Indonesian migrant workers in the informal sector in Taiwan.

"This is what has been among the factors that has made our relations with Taiwan increasing," Wahid, who is also one of the board members of Nahdlatul Ulama, which is the country's Islamic biggest organization.

The national anthems of the two countries were heard before the officials delivered their speeches.

The ceremony was closed with a toast and cake cutting by TETO chairman and MPR deputy chairman flanked by officials of the two countries.

Guests were then given an opportunity to visit "Taiwan Excellence" exhibition and enjoy Taiwanese dishes.
