REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK -- Transportation expert and Director of Research Directorate and Community Services of University of Indonesia, Ale Berawi, said that fast trains are needed to boost the middle class economy.

"So this is not a holiday train, but train to stimulate the middle class economy. It facilitates accessibility of businesses to become easier," said Ale, Wednesday (7/10).

According to him, the fast train is effectively to help access from one place to another. However, matter of distance should also be considered. According to him, it is better to build a fast train from Jakarta to Surabaya.

The construction of a fast train would require a new railway because the current railway would not allow the fast train to pass. Fast train line should have a width of 1.4 meters. While the existing track width was only 1 meter.

"It becomes faster and environmentally friendly mode of transportation," he added.
