REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo said the country hopes to start using e-Voting system in general elections in 2019.

"Electronic system of elections is expected to start in the general election all over the country in 2019," the minister said here on Tuesday night.

In preparation for nation wide use, the system would be used in 3 or 4 provinces in the elections of regional leaders (Pilkada) in 2017, he said.

"The experiment would be made in the 2017 Pilkada. If the experiment is successful we would start using the system in the general elections in 2019," he said.

Pilkada will be held simultaneously all over the country. The first simultaneous Pikada will be this year on Dec.9 to be held in 269 regional and district areas all over the country.

The minister said elections are also to be held at the same for the legislative and presidential elections.

Simultaneous elections are planned mainly for efficiency.

So far legislative elections have been held before presidential election.

He said for that purpose, he had asked the directorate general for demography and vital statistics to finish the process of distribution of electronic identity card (KTP).

"E-Voting has to be implemented with electronic KTP, therefore, all voters must have electronic KTP," he said.
