REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Susi Pudjiastuti, said that during September 2015, the Ministry with the Navy arrested 16 illegal fishing ships in Indonesian waters.
"The ships that were arrested are known from Vietnam and Philippines. Five of them were flagged Indonesia. These number do not include illegal ships arrested by the police," said Susi Pudjiastuti in a press release, Saturday (3/10).
Of the 16 ships, said Susi, nine ships were arrested by Directorate General of Marine Resources and Fisheries (PSDKP) Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Seven of them were 88-139 gross tonnage (GT) from Vietnam.
In addition, there were also two Indonesian flagged ships measuring 11 and 23 GT. While, the Navy arrested four ships from Philippines measuring 14-54 GT and three ships of 33, 102, and 195 GT.
Susi appreciated the arrest of illegal fishing ships conducted by the Directorate General of PSDKP and Navy. According to her, the ships were using foreign flag, and if they used the flag of Indonesia, it was a false flag.
Earlier, Susi asked the law enforcement agencies to apply a variety of laws to snare the illegal fishers, in an attempt to overcome illegal fishing in Indonesian waters.
"Limitations Fisheries Act needs to be covered by other laws," said Susi Pudjiastuti in Jakarta, Thursday (17/9).
According to Susi, a variety of other laws includes Shipping Law, Corruption Law, Labor Law, and Customs Act. It was to optimize the law enforcement which was not only for illegal fishing but other related criminal offenses.
