REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia commemorates National Batik Day in every 2nd October. Since 2009, UNESCO put batik to the list of intangible cultural heritage from Indonesia.
Batik expert, Era Soekamto said that commemoration of national batik day should not only be used as euphoria without meaning.
"As batik lover and observer of cultural history of Indonesia, I want people to understand that batik day not only can be enjoyed as euphoria, its meaning can also be learned," said Era Soekamto, which is also Creative Director of Irwan Tirta Private Collection, in Jakarta, Thursday (1/10 ).
How to love batik, said Era, is by not buying printed batik. It was because, the philosophy of batik is contained in the making process.
"In addition, people should also understand the meaning of the motif, such as, batik parang was about monotheism. So that its use must be appropriated," he added.
