Sorong earthquake, 62 people injured and 200 houses damaged

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SORONG -- Head of Data Information and Public Relations of National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck Sorong, West Papua, on Thursday (24/9), have caused damages.

"From the data collected by Sorong and Raja Ampat Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), there are 17 people who were seriously injured, 45 people who were slightly injured, and about 200 houses were damaged," said Sutopo, Friday (25/9).

Sutopo said BPBD of Sorong has helped the residents. Emergency post was also established, but BPBD of Sorong did not have tents to accommodate the refugees.

He added, the injured victims were hospitalized in Sele de Solu Hospital, in Sorong. Currently data collection was still ongoing and the number of victims were expected to rise.

An earthquake of 6.8 on the Richter scale was occurred on Thursday (24/9) night. The center was in the ocean with a depth of 10 km and the epicenter was 31 km from Northeast of Sorong, West Papua, or 68 km from Northeast of Raja Ampat, West Papua.

The source of the earthquake was in Sorong fault. It was reported, did not cause tsunami.
