Ministry asks Freeport to use domestic product

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Industry Saleh Husin asked PT Freeport Indonesia to use domestic components and products in building infrastructure and mine operations.

He asserted, Freeport has become part of the national industry. This was conveyed by the Minister  during a visit to the area of ​​the Freeport mine in Mimika, Papua, Saturday (19/9).

"In line with Freeport's commitment in Indonesia, I ask them to use more products that were produced in the country, such as the steel of Krakatau Steel, cement from the Indonesian Cement, coal from PTBA and others," said Saleh, Saturday (19/9).

In terms of quality, he added, Indonesia has qualified product to meet the operational needs of private companies and government. The proximity of the location has also been an advantage compared with products from other countries.

"Therefore, we deliberately invite directors of state among others PINDAD, Dahana, Krakatau Steel, Pertamina, the Indonesian Cement and PT Bukit Asam here," he stated.

Minister Saleh visited Timika with the Head of National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Sofyan Djalil and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Sudirman Said. This year, Freeport Indonesia plans to spend funds for projects amounted to 1.659 billion US dollars, or around Rp 22.41 trillion, if the exchange rate of Rp 13,500 per US dollar.

Details of the investment, which amounted to 1.16 billion US dollars to local shopping and 498 million US dollars to import expenditure. The government hoped such a large investment should be ideally given also to companies producing components and domestic manufacturing.
